BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Fernando Owner’s Guide
Most BFT keypad and intercom failures we see in San Fernando are repairable the same day. We carry BFT-compatible keypads, intercom handsets, and control boards on our trucks, and the typical installed repair runs from $185 to $420 depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, a handset, or the board itself. The way most homeowners discover the problem is simple: the keypad stops answering, the intercom goes silent in one direction, or the gate simply ignores the code that worked last week.
You press the buttons, the display lights up, and nothing happens at the gate. Or the intercom buzzes but the voice is garbled. That’s usually when the call comes in. The good news is we’ve been fixing these specific failures in San Fernando driveways for over four decades, and we bring the parts with us.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has produced several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the compatibility details matter more than most people expect. The older RIGEL keypads, the MITTO series remotes with their wired receiver boards, the ELI and THALIA control units, and the PHEBE and LUX intercom modules all use different wiring and different programming protocols. A keypad that works on a THALIA-based system will not necessarily talk to an older PERSEO board, even though both carry the BFT name.
The fastest way to identify what you have is to open the keypad faceplate or intercom cover and look at the label. BFT prints the model number and a date code on every board. Take a photo of that label with your phone before you call us. It saves a trip. One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly in older San Fernando neighborhoods: the RIGEL 3 and RIGEL 5 keypads look nearly identical from the outside, but the internal wiring harnesses are different, and installing the wrong one either kills the keypad backlight or blows the fuse on the control board. It’s the kind of thing you only learn by doing it, and it’s exactly why we stock both harness types on the truck.
We’re an independent service company, by the way. We’re not affiliated with BFT directly, but we install, repair, and stock parts for their equipment every week, alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and five other major opener brands.
Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- The keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This almost always points to a failing relay on the keypad board or a broken wire between the keypad and the control board. The display can look perfectly healthy while the signal never leaves the housing.
- Some buttons respond, others don’t. BFT keypads use a membrane switch layer under the buttons. With years of San Fernando sun and heat, that membrane degrades unevenly, so the “3” button dies while “7” still works. You can’t fix that reliably by cleaning the surface; the membrane needs replacement.
- The intercom buzzes but the voice is broken up or one-way. That’s typically corrosion in the handset connector or a failing audio transformer in the intercom module. On BFT intercoms, the issue is often in the wiring at the gate, where moisture has worked into a splice.
- The gate opens by remote but not by keypad. A remote working proves the control board and motor are fine. The problem is isolated to the keypad itself or its wiring run. That’s good news, because it narrows the repair scope and usually the cost.
- After a rain, the keypad stops responding entirely. Water intrusion in the keypad housing or an aged weather seal is the culprit. San Fernando doesn’t see much rain, but when it comes, it finds every crack in a fifteen-year-old seal.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest pricing picture for San Fernando, based on the jobs we do week in and week out:
- Keypad replacement, parts and labor: $185-$295 depending on which BFT model and whether a wiring repair is needed.
- Intercom handset or speaker module: $140-$260, plus any wiring trace-out.
- Control board repair or replacement: $280-$420, including programming the new board to your existing remotes and keypads.
- Diagnostic visit if we can’t identify the part over the phone: We’ll apply that fee toward the repair if you approve the work.
The price is quoted and agreed before any work starts, so there’s no surprise on the invoice. That’s a square deal, and it’s the only way we do business. Every completed job is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no paperwork, no arguing. The Keystone Standard applies to a $185 keypad swap the same as a full gate installation.
DIY or Call Us?
These are low-voltage systems, so the electrical danger is modest compared to a gate motor or high-tension spring. That said, the wiring for a BFT keypad runs through the gate post and into the control board, which does carry line voltage. If you open the control box, you’re inches from live 120-volt terminals. If you’re not comfortable with that, this is not the job to learn on.
What you can safely do before calling us: check whether the keypad display lights up at all, try a fresh code in the memory if you have the programming instructions, and look for visible cracks or water stains on the keypad housing. Those clues help us bring the right part on the first trip. Beyond that, the smarter move is a phone call to (925) 307-8328. Most of these repairs fit in a single visit, and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a keypad, a board, or a wiring issue before we ever roll a truck.
FAQs
In our experience, a BFT keypad in the San Fernando Valley typically lasts 8 to 12 years before the membrane or backlight gives out. The heat is what ages them: direct afternoon sun on a west-facing keypad shortens that to 6 or 7 years. When one fails at the 10-year mark, replacement usually makes more sense than repair. Call (925) 307-8328 and describe the symptoms; we’ll tell you honestly which side of that line you’re on.
Sometimes. If the failure is a cold solder joint, a loose wire, or a corroded connector, we can repair it on the spot for less than the cost of a full unit. If the membrane switch layer is worn through or the board is water-damaged, repair is a losing bet and replacement is the right call. We’ll show you the failed part before we replace anything, so you know exactly what happened. Our estimates are free, so call us for an honest read on it.
Most keypad and intercom replacements are complete in 45 to 90 minutes on site. That includes removing the old unit, mounting the new one, wiring it to the control board, programming your codes, and testing the gate through a full open-and-close cycle. If we find corroded wiring in the post, the job runs a bit longer. You’ll know the total before we start.
We carry the most common BFT keypad and intercom parts on our trucks: RIGEL keypads in multiple configurations, replacement membrane layers, intercom modules, and the wiring harness adapters that let newer units work with older boards. On the rare occasion we need to order something unusual, it’s usually in our hands within three business days. Call (925) 307-8328 with the model number from the label, and we’ll confirm whether we have it on the shelf today.
