BFT Welding & Fabrication: The San Fernando Owner’s Guide
If your BFT gate has a cracked hinge, a torn weld at the post, or a motor bracket that’s sheared loose, we stock BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts on our trucks and typically complete most San Fernando repairs in a single visit. Installed pricing usually lands between $180 and $540 depending on whether we’re welding a cracked bracket back solid, cutting out and replacing a rusted section of frame, or fabricating a new hinge assembly from scratch. Most homeowners discover the failure the same way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, or it shudders when the motor engages, and by the time you look close, the metal has been working against itself for months.
We’re an independent gate company. We’re not affiliated with BFT, but we service their openers daily across San Fernando, Sylmar, Mission Hills, and the north Valley.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This page covers the metalwork side of BFT gate systems: hinge brackets, motor mounts, rack mounts, post plates, gate frames, and the welded joints that connect them. The BFT opener models we see most often in San Fernando driveways are the Deimos, Phobos, and Aries series for swing gates, and the BFT rolling-gate line paired with rack-and-pinion drives. Each has its own mounting footprint, so the fabrication has to match the opener’s bolt pattern and torque geometry precisely.
The fastest way to identify what you need is to open the BFT control box and look for the data plate. The model number and serial are stamped there, usually on a small silver sticker. Write those down before you call. For the fabrication side, we measure the hinge centerline to the gate edge, the wall thickness of the existing steel, and the bolt circle on the motor mount. Here’s a gotcha we see regularly: BFT uses metric hardware across their entire line. A homeowner who picks up 3/8-inch bolts at the hardware store will get them started, then strip the threads halfway in. We stock the correct metric fasteners and weld plates drilled to BFT’s true dimensions, not an approximation.
OEM vs aftermarket: for mounting brackets and hinge plates, a properly fabricated aftermarket piece from 1/4-inch steel is every bit as strong as the factory part, often stronger because we cut it thicker than stock. For anything that touches the motor’s internal drive, stick with genuine BFT components. The tolerances inside those gearboxes are too tight for jury-rigging.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate drags or scrapes on one side. When a hinge weld begins to crack, that corner sags a fraction of an inch. The gate still opens, but it’s grinding the drive wheel or dragging the concrete. By the time you hear it, the weld is already compromised.
- Motor strains or thermal-trips on hot days. A bent or cracked motor mount puts the opener out of square with the gate. The motor works harder to compensate, overheats, and shuts down. In San Fernando summers, this shows up most after 2 or 3 pm.
- Visible rust bleeding from a welded joint. Water gets into the seam between the weld and the tube, and the rust works outward from inside. You’ll see orange streaks on the powder coat. By the time it’s visible on the surface, the metal underneath has thinned.
- Gate shudders or bounces when the BFT motor stops. A cracked bracket flexes under load, and when the opener stops, the gate rebounds off that flex. It’s the metal telling you the joint is moving when it shouldn’t.
- Mounting bolts keep loosening after you tighten them. If the holes in the bracket or post plate have wallowed out, tightening just gives you a few weeks before it slops loose again. The plate needs to be replaced, not re-torqued.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Fernando, most BFT welding and fabrication work falls into three price bands. A simple weld repair on a cracked hinge or bracket runs $180 to $260, including grinding, welding, and a rust-inhibiting primer. Replacing a failed bracket or fabricating a new one from plate steel runs $270 to $400, including removing the old piece, cutting and drilling the new one to BFT’s bolt pattern, and painting to match. A more involved job, like cutting out a rotted bottom rail section and welding in a replacement, lands between $420 and $540.
Every price is quoted and agreed before we touch the gate. You’ll know the number before a single bolt is turned. The quote includes labor, materials, and disposal of the old hardware. And the whole job is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can check the visible welds yourself: run your hand along the hinge plates and the motor mount, look for hairline cracks in the paint, and watch the gate run through a full cycle while you’re standing to the side. Those checks are safe and they’ll help when you describe the problem on the phone.
But the repair itself is not a weekend project. Welding on a live gate means working around high-tension springs, a 120V (or 240V) motor connection, and several hundred pounds of steel that wants to swing. A bad weld on a hinge holds until it doesn’t, and when it lets go, it lets go with weight behind it. This is one of the places where paying a trained welder is cheaper than the alternative. If the gate is off its post or the motor is hanging loose, kill the power at the BFT control board and call us at (925) 307-8328. We’ll be there when we say.
FAQs
Most original BFT gate hardware lasts 10 to 15 years in the San Fernando climate before a weld or bracket needs attention. The dry heat slows rust, but the temperature swings from cold nights to 100-degree days work the metal joints like a hinge, and that flex eventually cracks the welds. Gates on the north-facing side of the street tend to go a few years longer than south-facing, because south-facing gates take the full afternoon sun cycle every day.
If the crack is in the weld itself and the surrounding steel is sound, we can grind it out and re-weld it stronger than new. If the bracket itself is cracked through, or the bolt holes have wallowed out, replacement is the only fix that lasts. We’ll tell you straight which one you need, and the repair quote is always given before we start. Call (925) 307-8328 and we’ll look at it.
Most BFT weld repairs and bracket replacements are completed in a single visit, usually two to four hours from arrival to a running gate. More involved frame work, like cutting out a rotted rail section, may take a full day. We carry common BFT mounting plates, metric hardware, and steel stock on the truck, so we’re not chasing parts across the valley.
We stock the fabrication hardware we use most: steel plate, hinge pins, weld-in post plates, and metric mounting hardware sized to BFT’s bolt patterns. For genuine BFT electronic components, like control boards and motors, we order directly from our parts suppliers with next-day delivery in most San Fernando cases. If the part is on our truck, it’s getting installed today. If it’s not, you’ll know the exact lead time before we order it.
If your BFT gate is sagging, dragging, or sounding like it’s working too hard, don’t wait for the weld to let go.
