BFT Access Control Installation: The San Fernando Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in San Fernando typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re wiring a keypad, card reader, or phone-entry system into your existing BFT opener. We stock BFT-compatible control boards, receivers, keypads, and photocells on our trucks, so most access control jobs in San Fernando are completed in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: the keypad stops responding, the remote works only from six inches away, or the gate opens fine but won’t close without someone holding the button.

Victor Salinas has been working on BFT equipment in San Fernando driveways since before half the tract homes in Homecoming Acres had automatic gates at all. The failure is rarely the keypad itself. Usually it’s the receiver board, a corroded terminal strip, or a photocell that’s been knocked out of alignment by one too many close calls with a trash bin.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has used several control-board generations over the years, and the access control wiring differs between them. The older Perseo and Phobos series use a simple two-wire keypad connection with dry-contact inputs. The newer Deimos and Rigel series run on BFT’s U-Link protocol and need a compatible U-Link keypad or reader, not just any generic 12V unit. The Merak and Kustos lines fall somewhere in between, and we’ve seen homeowners buy the wrong keypad for those more times than we can count.

The reliable way to identify what you need is to open the control-box cover and read the model number off the board itself, not the motor housing. On BFT boards, the model is printed in white lettering near the terminal strip. If the label has faded from San Fernando Valley sun, which happens to black plastic enclosures within about five or six years, we can identify the board by terminal layout and connector type once we’re on site.

For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: BFT’s original keypads and readers are well made, but the pricing reflects the name. There are quality aftermarket weatherproof keypads from Linear and Viking that wire into most BFT boards without modification, and we stock both. For U-Link systems, we recommend staying with BFT parts. Mixing protocols on a U-Link bus causes intermittent faults that are harder to chase than a Santa Ana wind gust through an unlatched gate.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. That means we stock compatible parts and replacement boards without being tied to factory-only pricing or lead times.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently, especially after rain. Moisture is working into the housing or the terminal strip is corroding. San Fernando’s dry summers hide this until the first real winter rain hits, and then the keypad goes dead within a day.
  • Remote range drops to a few feet. The receiver antenna or the receiver board itself is degrading. We see this on BFT units that are eight to ten years old. A new receiver module brings the range right back.
  • Gate opens from the keypad but not the remote, or vice versa. One input channel on the control board has failed while the other still works. The board is on its way out, but a single-channel bypass can buy you time if you’d rather plan the replacement.
  • Gate stops or reverses mid-travel and the access control resets. The photocell loop is interrupting the logic. Often the access control itself is fine, and the problem is a misaligned safety beam. We check the alignment before condemning any board.
  • You hear a click but nothing moves. The relay on the access control board is firing, but the motor capacitor or the contactor has failed. That’s a motor-side fault, and a new keypad won’t fix it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A straight keypad or card-reader replacement on a BFT system in San Fernando generally lands between $450 and $750 installed. A full access control upgrade, meaning a new U-Link keypad, receiver, and control board, runs $900 to $1,400 depending on the BFT model and whether we’re adding phone-entry capability. The price is quoted and agreed before we turn a single screw, and it holds. No surprises on the bill.

Service Typical Installed Price
BFT keypad replacement (non-U-Link) $450 – $750
BFT receiver module replacement $350 – $600
Photocell pair replacement and alignment $250 – $400
Full access control upgrade (U-Link keypad, receiver, board) $900 – $1,400
Phone-entry system addition $1,200 – $1,800

Every installation includes wiring verification at the terminal strip, photocell alignment, travel-limit confirmation, and testing across all remotes and keypads on the property. The work is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it isn’t right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check yourself: confirm the keypad is getting power, look for loose wires at the terminal strip, and see whether the photocell lenses are clean and pointed at each other. Those three checks cost you nothing and occasionally save a service call. What you shouldn’t do is open a live BFT control board and start probing terminals. The board carries 120V at the transformer input even when the gate is idle, and the capacitor holds a charge after power is cut. That’s not a warning we give lightly.

If the problem turns out to be a loose wire, we’ll tell you that and charge you for the visit, not for a part you didn’t need. If it’s the board, we have the replacement on the truck and the job is done that day. Call (925) 307-8328 and a live person answers, any hour.
