Signs Your LiftMaster Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor windings are getting power, but the capacitor that gives the motor its starting torque has failed. In San Fernando’s summer heat, capacitors on LiftMaster units degrade faster than the rest of the motor. We see this on LA400 and LA412 units constantly. A capacitor swap is sometimes all it needs. If the motor has been humming for weeks, though, the windings are usually cooked too, and the motor itself needs replacing.

- Gate opens or closes on its own, or doesn’t respond to the remote. This is usually the control board, not the motor itself. But on older LGO and SL3000 units, a failing motor can draw erratic current that eventually fries the board. If we replace only the board and the motor is drawing double its rated amps, you’ll be back in the same spot in six months. We test motor draw before recommending a board-only fix.
- Burning smell or visible scorching on the housing. This one’s past repair. The windings have overheated, and the motor is done. Kill power at the breaker to the gate circuit and leave it off until we get there. A scorched LiftMaster motor is not something to keep testing.
